I recently announced that I will be offering my Foundations program through the Carroll County Arts Council. I thought it would be helpful to provide some information about what participants can expect to learn during these sessions, which I will share in a series of posts. First up, Session One- Build a Dynamic Web System.
What will I Learn to Help my Art Marketing in Session One?
If you’re thinking about this program or wondering what it might do for your art business, here is what you can expect in session one.
It Starts with a System
The first Foundations session on January 24th starts by overviewing a three-part system that any artist can use to market an art business. This allows artists to manage the overwhelming number of choices and options for marketing art. It’s a system that will set you apart from the deluge of artists and distractions vying for your audience’s attention.
Artists will learn how to consistently share work with an audience across various marketing channels, such as social media and email marketing. The information is relevant for artists currently using many popular web platforms such as WordPress, Weebly, Squarespace, and Faso – or artists who do not yet have a website. The program offers tools and specifics for creating and maintaining this system in a manageable way.
What We Cover in Session One of Foundations
First, artists get an overview of this three-part system so that participants can see what they will learn to build through the program. Then, we dive into setting up the first part of the system – the dynamic web-based hub for the business. Finally, we discuss how and why to make your website the central part of everything you do online, attracting an audience interested in your work. The presentation will address how to do this for an artist starting from scratch or one looking to improve upon an existing website. Specifics covered include the following:
- How to get started with an artist website for your marketing system or update an existing website into this system.
- Specific elements to add to your artist website.
- Content strategies to attract audiences that will connect with your work.
- Writing strategies for your art.
- How to keep a steady stream of new information, work and content flowing to an interested audience.
Best of all, we will cover how to do this without taking up all the time you need to create your work.
You can learn this system without being tech-savvy. For example, if you can write or edit a word document and upload an image from your computer, you can set this up.
Students will receive a workbook for easy follow-along during class and speaker notes after the session. In addition, Becky will be available to students after the class is over via email to answer questions.
If you have questions about this program or Foundations in particular, please don’t hesitate to get in touch here.

Art Marketing Roundtables
Thank you for the response to the Art Marketing Roundtables survey. Many ideas were shared for topics to cover, and I had trouble deciding where to start. So, since the end of the year is at hand, it would be good to focus on 2023 art business planning strategies.
2023 Planning Strategies for Your Art Business
Planning for the year ahead is a task you should do well before January 1st arrives. So start your year with momentum by getting a head start before the holidays.
While the roundtables are open-ended discussions, I will have some prepared material to get things going. Some of the things on the agenda will include:
How to do a year-end review.
Setting goals for the new year.
Planning strategies to implement in 2023.
Discussion during these strategies will also help to craft future topics for 2023.
Two sessions are scheduled to accommodate different schedules. Each one has limited space, so register soon and please sign-up for one session only.

Who Doesn’t Love a Free Art Marketing Workshop?
When you decide to improve your art business, you will often come across many free resources such as webinars and other tools to help you along. Sometimes it can be challenging to know which free webinars, masterclasses, and workshops to take and which to pass up. Yet, free invitations sound so enticing! It’s a common dilemma because there are SO many events available online.
Use Your Time Wisely
You have to be careful, though. There was a time when it seemed I worked more on attending free webinars and workshops than working on my business. Even though they are free, your time isn’t, so if you spend a lot of time on things you aren’t using, it’s essentially throwing money away. I’ve even paid for many courses and training that I did not use to their fullest.
While I still pay for training and development from time to time, the programs that I pay for are very strategic, and I use them for specific goals I’m working on at the moment. So here are some recommendations for prioritizing the time you spend learning how to improve your art marketing.
Prioritize Your Learning
Know your goals and understand how to reach them.
If a program isn’t in line with your plan, skip it. For example, let’s say a future goal is to create an online course, but you’re currently working on growing your client base. So skip those events about creating online courses and find one that helps you work on building an audience or mailing list.
Choose a format that best works for you.
Watching videos and attending events are much more time-consuming than reading. If you can read a PDF instead of watching a video, do so. If you’re an auditory learner and the subject lends itself to it, consider listening to something while you work in the studio.
Spend your time learning about things you need to do now.
If you may need something in a year, skip it for now. For every decision about attending an event, ask, “Will this get me closer to my goals — the ones I’m working on right now?”
There is a lot to be gained from the many resources out there to help you sell your art and grow your business. With a little discernment and strategy, you can use them to effectively help move your business to the next level.
Speaking of Events
I’ll be hosting a series of free online art marketing roundtables later this fall and into 2023. Take a quick survey about times and topics that might interest you. And please sign up for my email newsletter here to be notified when they are scheduled.
