Art Marketing Roundtables
Thank you for the response to the Art Marketing Roundtables survey. Many ideas were shared for topics to cover, and I had trouble deciding where to start. So, since the end of the year is at hand, it would be good to focus on 2023 art business planning strategies.
2023 Planning Strategies for Your Art Business
Planning for the year ahead is a task you should do well before January 1st arrives. So start your year with momentum by getting a head start before the holidays.
While the roundtables are open-ended discussions, I will have some prepared material to get things going. Some of the things on the agenda will include:
How to do a year-end review.
Setting goals for the new year.
Planning strategies to implement in 2023.
Discussion during these strategies will also help to craft future topics for 2023.
Two sessions are scheduled to accommodate different schedules. Each one has limited space, so register soon and please sign-up for one session only.

Who Doesn’t Love a Free Art Marketing Workshop?
When you decide to improve your art business, you will often come across many free resources such as webinars and other tools to help you along. Sometimes it can be challenging to know which free webinars, masterclasses, and workshops to take and which to pass up. Yet, free invitations sound so enticing! It’s a common dilemma because there are SO many events available online.
Use Your Time Wisely
You have to be careful, though. There was a time when it seemed I worked more on attending free webinars and workshops than working on my business. Even though they are free, your time isn’t, so if you spend a lot of time on things you aren’t using, it’s essentially throwing money away. I’ve even paid for many courses and training that I did not use to their fullest.
While I still pay for training and development from time to time, the programs that I pay for are very strategic, and I use them for specific goals I’m working on at the moment. So here are some recommendations for prioritizing the time you spend learning how to improve your art marketing.
Prioritize Your Learning
Know your goals and understand how to reach them.
If a program isn’t in line with your plan, skip it. For example, let’s say a future goal is to create an online course, but you’re currently working on growing your client base. So skip those events about creating online courses and find one that helps you work on building an audience or mailing list.
Choose a format that best works for you.
Watching videos and attending events are much more time-consuming than reading. If you can read a PDF instead of watching a video, do so. If you’re an auditory learner and the subject lends itself to it, consider listening to something while you work in the studio.
Spend your time learning about things you need to do now.
If you may need something in a year, skip it for now. For every decision about attending an event, ask, “Will this get me closer to my goals — the ones I’m working on right now?”
There is a lot to be gained from the many resources out there to help you sell your art and grow your business. With a little discernment and strategy, you can use them to effectively help move your business to the next level.

Foundations in Marketing Strategies for Artists
Over the next three months, I’ll be presenting Foundations, a three-part virtual art marketing workshop for The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes as part of their Business of Art series. This series is virtual and open to all artists, with members of The ARTS Council getting a discounted rate. Three sessions will be spread out over three months, starting on Tuesday, April 26, 2022. Artists can register for one, two, or all three sessions.
What is Foundations?
This program guides artists through setting up a manageable system that becomes a focused hub for a thriving art business. While the system is web-based, it supports all artist marketing activities, including in-person events such as exhibits, studio tours, and festivals.

Session One: Tuesday, April 26, 6-8 pm
Set up your art marketing system.
The first session will include building a dynamic web presence, overcoming challenges, and building a marketing system that works for your visual art business. Using a simple three-part marketing system, artists will learn to consistently share work with an audience across various marketing channels, such as social media and email marketing.
Session Two: Tuesday, May 24, 6-8 pm
Reaching an audience.
Session two builds on the first by diving into finding and growing a unique audience of collectors and fans.
The presentation also explains how to maintain strong relationships with a collector and fan base, including strategies and tools to help in this process.
Session Three: Tuesday, June 21, 6-8 pm
Manage Your Art Marketing Channels
This session works to help artists focus on the best art marketing channels for their work and business model. In the first half of the session, we will review traditional and non-traditional marketing channels for visual artists and how to determine which ones are best for your work.
Then, we will cover how to manage the channels consistently without feeling like you are short on time. This includes an outline of simple strategies and daily activities for your daily routines. We will also discuss how to deliver a steady stream of content for fans and followers and tricks and hacks for using some more popular platforms for visual artists, such as Facebook and Instagram.
If you’ve attended Build a Dynamic Web Presence in the past, these workshops will expand upon topics in that presentation.
Sign up for one or all three at this link.

Here are some marketing ideas for your Monday morning.
Four art marketing ideas:
1 – Share your sketchbook images. People love to look at behind-the-scenes work such as this.
2 – Does your community have empty storefronts? Approach your local development agency or government to find out if there are opportunities for you to display your work.
3 – Will you be exhibiting at an upcoming fair or festival? Make sure to send an email informing people where they can find you – especially if it is a large event – give them the booth number and specific details on finding you. And, it doesn’t hurt to send it more than once.
4 – Are you using Instagram? Here are some useful tips from Wishpond.
